What if you’re passionate about 10 different things and have no idea which one is ‘the one’? —here’s how to sort through the noise and find your true purpose.
Do You Ever Feel Like You’re “All Over the Place”?
Have you ever been excited about so many different things that you didn’t know which one to focus on? One week, you’re ready to start a business. The next, you’re dreaming of writing a book. Then you find yourself researching how to launch a podcast or go back to school.
Before you know it, you’re stuck in what I call the “passion spiral.” You want to do everything—so you end up doing… everything of nothing.
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world started off just like you—multi-passionate, curious, and unsure where to focus.
Let me tell you some stories that might just change how you think about “finding your true calling.”
When You’re Passionate About Everything: Real Stories of Multi-Passionate Legends
Issa Rae – From YouTube Star to Hollywood Powerhouse
You probably know Issa Rae as the creator and star of the hit TV show Insecure, but her journey didn’t start on TV—it started on YouTube.
Back in college, Issa was passionate about acting, writing, and creating stories about Black experiences. But she didn’t know where to start. Hollywood wasn’t exactly welcoming to awkward, funny, relatable Black characters back then.
So what did she do? She leaned into all her passions: writing, acting, producing, and even editing. She created a web series called Awkward Black Girl—filming with friends on a shoestring budget—and it blew up.
Today, she’s a Hollywood powerhouse with an Emmy nomination, a media company, and her own production studio. Her success didn’t come from choosing just one passion—it came from blending her creative talents into something totally her own.
Lesson: You don’t always have to “pick” one passion. Sometimes, your calling is a mix of all your interests—if you’re willing to be creative. Ask yourself how you can blend those passions together into a solid direction.
Donald Glover – Actor, Writer, Comedian, Rapper, Director… Everything
How do you even define Donald Glover? He’s won awards for acting (Atlanta), writing (30 Rock), and music (as Childish Gambino). Oh, and he’s also a stand-up comedian, producer, and director.
Here’s the thing: Glover didn’t wait for permission to explore all his talents. He followed whatever lit him up at the moment. He wrote comedy scripts while making music. He did stand-up while starring in TV shows.
He built a creative empire—not by choosing one thing, but by trusting that all his passions could fit together.
Lesson: You don’t have to fit into one box. Your true calling might be a blend of your talents—if you let yourself be fully you. Ask yourself, what is the common thread between all these passions? What is the theme here?
Misty Copeland – From Ballet to Advocacy and Beyond
Most people know Misty Copeland as the first Black female principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. But Misty’s calling extends far beyond ballet.
She’s a passionate advocate for youth empowerment, a bestselling author, a fitness ambassador, and a motivational speaker. Her journey didn’t stop at becoming a world-class ballerina—she expanded her calling into mentoring young dancers, writing inspiring books, and using her platform for change.
Her calling started with ballet—but grew as she explored other passions along the way.
Lesson: Your calling isn’t a fixed destination—it can evolve and expand as you follow what matters most to you. Ask yourself, how can I use my primary passion as a channel for my other gifts and interests?
So… What If You’re Passionate About Many Things?
After hearing these stories, you might be thinking, “Okay, but what about me? I’m still overwhelmed by all my passions!”
Here’s the truth: Having many passions isn’t a curse—it’s a gift. But the key is learning how to navigate them without getting stuck in overwhelm.

How to Find Your True Calling When You Love Everything
-
Stop Thinking “One Passion” — Think “Purpose Theme”
Forget the idea that you have to choose one passion. Instead, think about a purpose theme—the common thread that ties your passions together.
Ask Yourself:
- What’s the bigger reason behind why you love what you love?
- What’s the core feeling or impact you want to create through your passions?
For example:
- If you love writing, teaching, and speaking, your theme might be “inspiring others through storytelling.”
- If you love music, activism, and business, your theme might be “creating cultural change through creative leadership.”
Your calling might be the mission behind all your passions—not just one specific career.
-
Follow What Lights You Up… Right Now
Multi-passionate people often get stuck thinking, “What if I choose the wrong thing?”
Here’s the truth: There’s no wrong choice. Your purpose isn’t something you find—it’s something you live.
Ask Yourself:
- What feels most exciting or meaningful right now?
- What project, idea, or hobby are you curious about exploring next?
Take action on what excites you today. Your purpose will become clearer as you move forward—not by sitting still and overthinking.
-
Create a “Passion Portfolio”
Who says you can only do one thing? Build a “passion portfolio”—a collection of different projects, jobs, or creative outlets that bring your passions to life.
Examples:
- Start a side hustle while working a steady job.
- Launch a YouTube channel while pursuing your main career.
- Volunteer or teach in areas you’re passionate about.
Your true calling doesn’t have to fit into a single job title or career—it can be a blend of all your creative pursuits.
-
Trust the “Seasons” of Your Purpose
Your passions will evolve over time—and that’s okay. You don’t have to commit to one thing for life. You can pursue different passions during different “seasons” of your life.
Donald Glover shifted from comedy to music to directing. Misty Copeland went from ballet to writing and advocacy. Your calling can grow as you grow.
Ask Yourself:
- What passion feels right for this season of my life?
- How can I stay open to new passions as I evolve?

You’re Not “Too Much”—You’re Multi-Passionate
Here’s the bottom line: You’re not scattered or unfocused—you’re multi-passionate. And that’s a good thing.
The world needs people like you—people who are curious, creative, and ready to make an impact in many ways.
So stop stressing about “choosing the right thing.” Instead, follow what lights you up, explore your passions, and let your purpose reveal itself as you live it.
Your calling isn’t just one thing—it’s everything that makes you you.
